Howie Tran, MD, FACC, FHFSA, is a board-certified transplant cardiologist specializing in advanced heart failure, heart transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support. As Medical Director of the Advanced Heart Failure Program at Hoag Clinic, he leads care for patients with the most complex and high-risk forms of heart disease. Dr. Tran focuses on patients whose conditions extend beyond routine treatment — including those being evaluated for heart transplantation or durable mechanical circulatory support such as left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). He is committed to delivering advanced therapies with clarity, compassion, and close partnership, helping patients and families navigate critical decisions with confidence. He earned his medical degree from Philadelphia and completed his internship, residency, and cardiovascular disease fellowship at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He pursued advanced training in heart failure and transplant cardiology at the University of California, San Diego, where he later served on faculty in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine for twelve years. During his academic career, Dr. Tran held multiple leadership roles in heart failure, cardiogenic shock, and mechanical circulatory support programs, helping build systems designed to deliver high-reliability care for critically ill patients. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and is recognized nationally for his expertise in advanced heart failure and cardiogenic shock management.
